Though the latest version of Windows has somewhat improved sound options for its native media player, it still lacks certain features. One of these is called Soundfont Librarian, which is a third-party software that acts like a sound library for your computer. The library allows you to listen to any sound file in 3D using 3D speakers or headphones, but if you're on Windows 7 then you'll need this app because Soundfont Librarian comes preinstalled with it. More than just an extension for your operating system's default app, Soundfont Librarian makes playing sound files easier and more enjoyable by providing realistic sounding effects and sounds along with ease-of-use features such as multiple sample rates and bit depths. Simply by accessing the application's interface, you can adjust settings for playback speed, bit depth, sample rate, and window size. The app allows you to select different sound effects to use with each sound format. For instance, you can choose between "Space-Like" or "Sci-Fi" effects. If you want to play a sound file in mono or stereo, Soundfont Librarian will make this process very easy for you by adding a control menu under the playback controls section. The menu displays all available quality options so that it's easier than ever to find out which format your chosen file is in.Though Soundfont Librarian is a simple and easy to use app, it's definitely not flawless. When playing a high quality sound file, the application crashed once. On two other occasions, I had to restart my computer due to a sound glitch, prompting me to restart Soundfont Librarian. Also, on some files the app failed to open up and required a restart of my OS. The latest version of Soundfont Librarian is a major upgrade compared to previous versions. On OS X OS 7, there was no way to adjust playback speed or sample rate from within the window menu that was available in OS X OS 6.5 and OS X OS 7.1 updates of Soundfont Librarian. In OS X OS 8. 1, this feature was added as well as a new effect called "Mastering with real stereo panning." You can now adjust the speed of playback or even use a "filter" to enhance the sound. The ability to have your sound playing in front of you instead of from behind is pretty cool, but it makes it impossible to play anything on two speakers at once (unless you're using headphones and no one else is in the room with you). Not only has the sound quality of this app been updated via newer processor advancements, but performance has also been improved. On OS X OS 7 and earlier versions, Soundfont Librarian would frequently freeze on me and I would have to restart my computer. Now in OS X OS 8, Soundfont Librarian runs a little better, but I still run into a couple of bugs. Soundfont Librarian has been known to have many bugs when it comes to working on computers running Windows XP. For instance, the program consistently freezes when choosing a format from the "format selection window" in older versions of Windows XP. In Windows Vista and 7, Soundfont Librarian works better and has much fewer errors than previous versions of this software. Also, some users have reported problems getting the app to work on older operating systems such as Windows 98/ME/2000 or even some more recent ones like XP or Vista. eccc085e13
